Student Presentations: Product Design for the Developing World

November 29, 2006

Engineering Design of Products for the Developing World (E/ME 105), taught by Ken Pickar, visiting professor of mechanical engineering at Caltech, has evolved over the last three years to focus on designs for people earning less than a dollar a day, particularly in rural Guatemala. The course is built around six teams comprised of Caltech students, an Art Center student, and a member of each team from Landivar University in Guatemala City. These Guatemalan students have had frequent conversations over the quarter with their Pasadena teammates. They have also visited and analyzed the rural areas and target customers for our products and participated in the designs. For their final presentations, the Caltech and Guatemalan students will jointly present a summation of their term's worth of work.

The students' final presentations will take place at 2 to 4:30 p.m. After the presentations there will be a poster session and refreshments from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Attendees are welcome to join and leave the talks when they please.
