Caltech Scientists Excel in Young Investigator Research Program

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research recently announced that it will award approximately $14.6 million in grants to 38 scientists and engineers, including two Caltech researchers, who submitted research proposals through the Air Force's Young Investigator Research Program.With support from the grant, Tracey Ho, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Caltech, will pursue work on robust-network transmission and storage using coding. Andrew D. Straw, a postdoctoral scholar in bioengineering, will focus on a quantitative investigation of high-level control of free-flight behavior in flies. The Young Investigator Research Program is open to scientists and engineers at research institutions across the United States who have received a PhD or equivalent degree in the last five years and show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. According to officials from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, 202 proposals were submitted for the competition this year.
