IMSS Outage: E-mail and Other Critical Services

November 3, 2009

During the summer, a critical piece of power equipment malfunctioned in the IMSS server room which caused an unexpected shutdown of most IMSS services. Further analysis revealed power equipment damage that needs to be repaired during a server room maintenance window. This will necessitate the temporary shutdown of most IMSS services.

The maintenance is scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 14, at 5 p.m. During the maintenance, the server room will be powered down, and most services will be offline. We expect to have most services back online by midnight, but some services may remain unavailable until 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

Affected services will include:

  • IMSS e-mail (Unix, Exchange, Blackberry, Webmail) and calendaring
  • access.caltech
  • VPN & dial-up
  • file sharing
  • Web hosting
  • administrative applications (Oracle, FAMIS, Data Warehouse, Exeter, etc.)
  • aAny customer-owned systems/applications hosted in the IMSS server room
Please note that general campus network services (ethernet and wireless) will not be affected by this maintenance.

Status updates about the maintenance will be posted on the IMSS website (http://imss.caltech.edu), which will remain online during the maintenance. If you have questions about specific systems or services that will be affected, contact the Help Desk at 395-3500 or help@caltech.edu.
