Senior Development Officer Appointed

February 7, 2010 - Valerie Otten has joined Caltech as a senior development officer, effective January 11. In addition to managing a portfolio of principal- and major-gift prospects, she will serve as development liaison for the Resnick Institute advisory council and for a second council to be determined. Otten served as assistant dean of development for engineering and the sciences at UC Santa Barbara and, prior to that, as a senior fund-raising executive for several nationally prominent organizations, including the National History Museum of Los Angeles, the Art Center College of Design, and the National Right to Work Legal Defense and Education Foundation. Otten earned her BA from Virginia Tech and her MA in public communication from American University.

Choral Music Director Appointed

December 6, 2009 - Nancy Sulahian has been appointed choral music director, effective September 1; she replaces Desiree LaVertu, who has moved to Occidental College. A longtime professional member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Sulahian also performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and has sung under conductors Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Zubin Mehta, Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, and Pierre Boulez. In her 12 years as conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale's Chamber Singers, she has presented hundreds of community and school performances throughout Southern California. In addition, she is music director at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale and conductor of Disneyland's annual Christmas Candlelight Procession. Sulahian holds music degrees from USC.

New Communications Editor Joins Caltech

September 6, 2009 - Sara Arnold has joined the Office of Communications as its new copy/production editor, effective August 31. In addition to general proofreading/copyediting and assisting with development communications, she will be responsible for the Caltech Catalog and the departmental section of the Personnel Directory. Arnold comes to Caltech from Brown Publishing Network in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she edited and oversaw production of a variety of K-12 textbooks and other educational materials. She also has substantial freelance experience editing scientific and legal texts. Arnold holds a BA in sociology from Williams College.

Senior Development Officer Appointed

September 6, 2009 - Cathy Cosgrove has been appointed a senior development officer, effective August 31. Bringing with her a broad background in higher-education fund-raising, with a focus on Southern California, she has most recently served as vice president of development for the Library Foundation of Los Angeles. Prior to that, Cosgrove held senior management positions in development at both Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and Loyola Marymount University.

Development Director Named

September 6, 2009 - Margie Dufford has been named director of administration and organizational development in Caltech's development office, starting in September. Her responsibilities will include assisting in the integration of the development and communication offices and recommending management and operational improvements to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. Dufford comes to the Institute with an extensive management background in higher education, most recently with UC Riverside. She has an MBA from USC, worked for many years there in administration and finance, and was later senior associate dean for administration in USC's Viterbi School of Engineering.

New Senior Development Officer Joins Caltech

September 6, 2009 - Matt Leroux has joined Caltech as a senior development officer, effective August 24. In addition to managing a portfolio of principal and major-gift prospects, he will serve as development liaison for two division-chair councils. He comes from the Arizona State University Foundation, where he worked with ASU donors and prospects in Northern California. He has also raised private support for national nonprofits such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, MIT, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, and Middlebury College. At Middlebury, Leroux earned a BA with a double major in biology and Spanish.

New EAS Manager of Communications Appointed

August 19, 2009 - Trity Pourbahrami has joined the engineering and applied science division as the new manager of its communications office. A certified mediator and facilitator, she has 15 years of research and communications experience in the physical, biological, and social sciences and has worked on numerous interdisciplinary projects. She also has extensive experience organizing events, training programs, and conferences and has trained educators, health-care workers, and managers in conflict resolution and better communication. Pourbahrami has a BS in physics and physiology and an MS in social welfare and public administration.

Communications Manager Named

August 2, 2009 - Beth Harnick-Shapiro has joined the Office of Communications as its online communications manager, effective August 3. She will supervise the office's web group. Harnick-Shapiro comes to Caltech from UC Irvine, where she was director of web communications for the university. New VP for DAR Named

May 3, 2009 - Peter deCourcy Hero has been named vice president for development and alumni relations, effective May 1. Former senior advisor to the CEO and board of directors of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF), he has most recently served as senior fellow at the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He received his BA and MA in art history from Williams College and MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and has served as director of the Oregon Arts Commission, president of the Maine College of Art, and president and CEO of Community Foundation Silicon Valley (CFSV). His publications include Local Mission, Global Vision: Community Foundations in the 21st Century, which has been translated into four languages.

September 17, 2008 - Lori Oliwenstein has joined Media Relations as senior science writer, effective September 8. She will write press releases and articles and will assist the media. A prolific author, she has written for Time magazine, Psychology Today, Fit Pregnancy, and EverydayHealth.com, as well as for The Loh Down on Science, Caltech's radio science minute. She comes to Caltech from USC, where she worked for the Health Sciences Campus as a science writer, and before that she was an editor for Discover magazine. She is also author of the book Taming Bipolar Disorder and is coauthor of Superhuman: The Awesome Power Within. She received her BS from Union College in 1986 and an MA (with a certificate in science writing) from NYU in 1988.

TACIT Interim Director Appointed

September 7, 2008 - Brian Brophy has been appointed interim director of Theater Arts at Caltech (TACIT), replacing retiring director Shirley Marneus effective August 18. An actor, director, and playwright for nearly 30 years and a college professor for the past 10, Brophy holds an MFA in creative writing for the performing arts from UC Riverside and an MA in theater from Cal State L.A. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at the Peach Research Center in Varanasi at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and has acted in numerous stage productions in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles and in numerous television shows as well as over 30 feature films. New Director of Media Relations Named

May 4, 2008 - Jon Weiner has been named director of media relations, replacing retiring Jill Perry effective May 19. He comes to Caltech from USC, whose Office of Health Sciences Public Relations and Marketing he joined in 2000 as media relations manager. He became director of public relations and marketing in 2003 and executive director in 2005. Prior to USC, he worked for 10 years in the broadcast news business, as a television news producer and assignments editor for CBS News in Miami and Los Angeles and at several CBS and NBC affiliates around the country. He received his bachelor's degree in international relations from UC Davis, and his master's degree in journalism from USC, and his honors include two Golden Advocate awards for media relations campaigns. He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the National Association of Science Writers, as well as the steering committee of the National Cancer Institutes' Public Affairs Network.

Associate Vice President Appointed

October 17, 2007 - Jim Cowell has been named associate vice president for facilities planning and management, effective September 26. He comes from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he served as deputy chief facilities executive for new construction, with responsibility for a $12 billion capital-improvement program. Prior to that, he served for 24 years in the U.S. Navy. Commissioned as an ensign in the Civil Engineer Corps in 1980 after graduating from the University of Florida, he most recently as a captain commanded the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme. He also taught courses in naval architecture and ocean engineering at the Naval Academy. In 1988 he earned his master's degree in civil engineering from MIT, and he is a registered professional engineer in California.

Women's Center Director Named

June 3, 2007 - Felicia Hunt has been named director of the Caltech Women's Center, effective June 18. She has worked in higher education for many years, most recently as director of the Doctoral Support Center at USC. Prior to that she served as assistant dean of students at Cornell University and as institutional effectiveness and assessment coordinator at the College of Micronesia–Federated States of Micronesia, where she worked with administration, faculty, and students to implement a model of institutional assessment and planning. As part of her responsibilities at Caltech, Hunt will serve as the Institute's Title IX officer and as Student Affairs' Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation administrative liaison. She received her PhD in educational leadership from USC.

New Director Named

August 15, 2006 - Sandya Narayanswami has joined Caltech as director of corporate and foundation relations, effective August 1. She comes from the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, where she served as senior foundation and corporate relations officer. Previously she was founding consultant for Science Communications & Consulting, director of foundation relations at the University of Washington, and associate staff scientist at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. She received her BSc in biological sciences from Leicester University, England, her PhD from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and her postdoctoral training at l'Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France, and at UC Irvine. She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

New Keck Director Appointed

July 2, 2006 - Taft Armandroff has been appointed director of the W. M. Keck Observatory, on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, effective July 1. He succeeds Frederic Chaffee, who has been director for the past 10 years. A research astronomer, Armandroff served as associate director at the National Optical Astronomical Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, as well as director of its Gemini Science Center, and he has ties to Hawaii through his work with the Gemini Observatory in Hilo. He will continue the work of improving Mauna Kea's scientific capabilities while respecting its environmental and cultural resources. The Keck Observatory's governing body is the California Association for Research in Astronomy, whose board of directors includes representatives from Caltech, the University of California, and NASA.

LIGO Executive Director Named

April 2, 2006 - Jay Marx has been named executive director of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). A particle physicist, Marx will succeed Barry Barish, Linde Professor of Physics, Emeritus, who led the Caltech-MIT project through its construction and first major science runs. Marx is particularly known for his leadership in the design and construction of particle-physics instruments for national laboratories. He has been a senior physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1981, and before that he was a member of the physics faculty at Yale University.

Ido Yavetz Is First Eleanor Searle Visiting Professor of History

January 4, 2006 - Ido Yavetz joined Caltech and the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens this fall as the first-ever Eleanor Searle Visiting Professor of History, a position he will hold for the academic year. Through this newly established joint program, he will teach two courses at Caltech and conduct research at the Huntington in the area of ancient Greek astronomy. A specialist in this area as well as classical electromagnetic field theory, electrical technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and entomology in the 19th century, he received his BA in 1978 and his PhD in 1989 from Tel Aviv University, where he is a senior lecturer.

John Grotzinger Joins Faculty as Fletcher Jones Professor of Geology

January 4, 2006 - John Grotzinger has joined Caltech's faculty as Fletcher Jones Professor of Geology. An eminent sedimentologist and stratigrapher with wide-ranging interests in sedimentary processes, geobiology, and Earth's early history, he is also a key member of the Mars Exploration Rover team, responsible for assessing the role of liquid water in shaping Martian landforms. He received his BS from Hobart College in 1979, his MS from the University of Montana in 1981, and his PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985.
